SA producers Bettina Hamilton, Peta Astbury Bulsara and Kate Butler have been selected for the 2022 Charlie’s Virtual Residency, while Michael and Danny Philippou, and Kirsty Stark are Talent Gateway and Global Producers Exchange recipients.

For a second year, three South Australian producers will strengthen their connections with the US film and television industry without having to leave Adelaide, through the Charlie’s Virtual Residency, an initiative from the SAFC and Australians in Film (AiF).

Delivered by AiF and supported by the SAFC, Charlie’s Virtual Residency is an online version of AiF’s Los Angeles screen hub Charlie’s, a creative workspace for the Australian film making community in the US to conduct business, collaborate and network.

Three SA producers have been selected for the Residency in 2022, with the aim of expanding their knowledge and networks with the international screen marketplace:

The unique online initiative features a bespoke program of facilitated group sessions with US screen practitioners from film and television production companies, development executives, managers and agents, as well as individual meetings with AiF Executive Director Peter Ritchie and US industry members. The program will also include tailored sessions covering the US industry and market intelligence and insights into how South Australian practitioners can compete in the international market.

The news follows another announcement from AiF earlier in the month announcing the recipients of the AiF and Screen Australia Talent Gateway and Global Producers Exchange initiatives, of which the SAFC is a proud supporting partner, two joint initiatives for established Australian creatives to expand on their skills and connect with key US decision makers, as well as help position Australian projects for success in an increasingly global market.

South Australian filmmaking twins Danny and Michael Philippou have been chosen for the Talent Gateway, which provides screenwriters and directors with the skills, knowledge, access, and relationships necessary to succeed further in the global market. The program aims to attract US support, investment and partnerships for Australian content and careers. The Philippou brothers, whose SAFC-supported debut feature film Talk to Me will close the Adelaide Film Festival on 30 October, will participate in a bespoke program of roundtables, masterclasses, introductions with key US based screen decision makers and individualised mentorships running from November 2022 to June 2023.

South Australian producer Kirsty Stark of Epic Films has been selected for the Global Producers Exchange, which provides Australia’s leading scripted producers with the skills, knowledge, access and relationships necessary to succeed in the global market and to attract foreign investment and marketplace partnerships for Australian scripted content. The exchange aims to give Australian IP and cultural stories the opportunity to be developed with internationally based collaborators who possess a global outlook and a proven track record of success with international audiences and to help position projects for success in the global market. Kirsty produced two seasons of Emmy Award winning children’s series First Day, and was co-producer on Stateless.
